We are seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates who share a passion for scientific discovery to join an interactive, interdisciplinary and international team. The Postdoctoral Research Scientists will work on European Research Council (ERC) funding to investigate the causes of inter-individual variability in stress-responsive genes and its consequences for life history traits using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system. This follows recent insights gained into the mechanisms of inter-individual variability in the expression of chaperones, published in Science (2012) 335(6064): 82-5 and Nature (2011) 480(7376): 250-3.

Many life-history traits are variable, notably lifespan, and many environmental and genetic differences can cause this variability. However, there is also a stochastic component because they vary in genetically identical laboratory strains of C. elegans, reared in controlled environmental conditions. We are interested in understanding what are the causes underlying inter-individual variability in environmentally responsive genes and the consequences for lifespan and healthspan. Answering these questions requires the development of new technologies that make whole animals and single-cells centre stage, including genomics, epigenomics and imaging tools, and will have a significant conceptual impact on ageing research and personalized medicine.

Candidates must have a PhD in the relevant field at commencement of employment. Key skills include molecular biology, genetics, and desirably competence in genomics, epigenomics and/or single cell genomics techniques and familiarity with model systems or C.elegans.

The successful applicants will join an interactive, multidisciplinary team in the Epigenetics Programme http://www.babraham.ac.uk/our-research/epigenetics/olivia-casanueva at the Babraham Institute. Informal enquiries may be made to Dr. Olivia Casanueva olivia.casanueva@babraham.ac.uk. This is a limited term contract with funding available for three years in the first instance and possibly up to 5 years.
