Assistant Professor in Microbiology

The Division of Biology at Kansas State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in microbiology at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year. We seek candidates addressing cutting-edge questions in microbiology using molecular, immunological or genomic approaches. We are especially interested in research focusing on the interactions of bacteria with plant or animal hosts, their environments or other microbes as well as the evolution of such relationships. Such interactions include, but are not limited to, infectious disease, pathogenesis, symbiosis, commensalism, facilitation or multi-species interactions (yes, this includes interactions between nematodes and bacteria!). The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in scholarship, and will be expected to develop an independent extramurally-funded research program in his/her area of expertise, and to participate in teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students. Opportunities also exist to participate in interdisciplinary research programs, as appropriate. Minimum requirements include a PhD in biological sciences or related field and post-doctoral experience.
The Division of Biology (www.ksu.edu/biology) is a large, diverse and collegial faculty with an excellent record of research and teaching. Extramural research funding in the Division averages approximately $10M per year. The Division Graduate Program offers a PhD degree in Microbiology as well as PhD and MS degrees in Biology. Our broad research program includes a vibrant and active community of faculty with research interests in molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, genetics, genomics, microbial ecology and related disciplines. Candidates should complement existing strengths in the Division and be able to contribute to collaborative initiatives. The Division of Biology has Laboratory Animal Care Services and a Microscopy Facility, and is home to the Bioinformatics Center, the Arthropod Genomics Center, the Kansas Lipidomics Research Center, the Ecological Genomics Institute, the Konza Prairie Biological Station, and a program in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (www.ksu.edu/biology/multiresearch.html).
Kansas State University is a major research university with excellent research facilities, including the BSL3 Biosecurity Research Institute (http://www.bri.k-state.edu), genomics and proteomics core facilities and a Diagnostic Medicine Laboratory. Additional interrelated research exists within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, the Department of Plant Pathology and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Kansas State University is located in the city of Manhattan (www.ci.manhattan.ks.us), a dynamic college community of about 50,000 located in the scenic Flint Hills of northeastern Kansas.
