Bioinformatician - WormBase-ParaSite

Bioinformatician - WormBase-ParaSite

Salary range:£30574 to £38564 per annum plus excellent benefits.

We are seeking a motivated Bioinformatician to work on WormBase-ParaSite (parasite.wormbase.org), a new portal for parasitic worm genomics, integrating data for hundreds of species and providing efficient and intuitive access to the data for researchers. Parasitic worms are responsible for more than one billion human infections globally and have a devastating impact on livestock and agriculture.

You will work on a wide range of analysis, integration, production and community-engagement activities for WormBase-ParaSite, and will also actively participate in the exciting next phase of development for the resource. The main areas of focus will be:

  • Analysis, integration and presentation of large-scale functional genomics data sets (e.g. RNASeq gene expression assays)
  • Data integration and development to enable WormBase ParaSite as tool for anti-helminthic drug target identification
  • Customization and deployment of automated genome annotation and comparative genomics pipelines that scale to hundreds of genomes
  • Outreach, including talks and practical demonstrations at workshops and conferences

WormBase-ParaSite is a sister project to the well-known WormBase (www.wormbase.org) and Ensembl (www.ensembl.org) projects.
The Ensembl genomics infrastructure is used in a number of ways in the project. The post is also highly collaborative,
and will involve working closely with other WormBase and Ensembl staff both at the Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).

Although this post is fixed-term in the first instance, it is anticipated that the next phase of development will lay the foundations for sustainability and longer-term funding.
