Date confusion

Hi, when was the sequencing of C. elegans’ genome completely completed? I thought it was at the end of 2002 but recently I’ve read it was later and it’s important for a uni. report I’ve got to hand in.

Hoping you can help me, thanks.

Most of the sequence was done in 1998 and the missing gaps were finished by October 2002.

Good luck!

Bear in mind that genomes are never really finished. Very minor corrections have been made ever since the worm genome was published in 1998. E.g. in March 2009, 2 bp were removed from the genome and 2 bp were added (http://wiki.wormbase.org/index.php/WS201). Very occasionally, bigger changes will be made which might affect a few hundred nucleotides. No sequencing technology is 100% accurate, so the more you look at a genome sequence, the more errors you will discover.
