Although a standard GO annotation is simply a statement about the function of a gene product, there is a lot more to an annotation that just a GO term and a gene product. The Gene Association File (GAF), currently version 2.2, is a tab-deliminated file with 17 fields that record everything from the database of the identifier for the gene product to the curation group that created the annotation.
