Position to replace my long standing lab manager who is retiring.
Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will participate in research to identify mechanisms that contribute to normal mammalian development, congenital and adult onset disease processes, and wound healing. A wide range of experiments involving whole-animal, molecular, genetic, biochemical and microscopy approaches will be carried out. The Research Associate will maintain a notebook describing experimental methods and results, participate in research discussions, train students in laboratory procedures, and interpret research results.
MAJOR RESONSIBILITES
- Plan, organize, and conduct research using mice and cultured cells.
- Operate basic laboratory equipment (dissecting microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, and gel documentation systems).
- Maintain mouse lines and coordinate breeding to obtain experimental mice for lab projects.
- Perform ocular microsurgery
- Perform live and fixed sample confocal imaging for analyzing protein localization.
- Perform molecular biology and biochemical techniques including RNA-seq, RT-PCR, Western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, protein expression, and protein purification.
- Maintain an inventory of lab supplies and equipment, reorder lab supplies, and track new orders of equipment and supplies.
- Maintain laboratory databases, including biological and chemical samples and reagent inventories.
- Coordinate and supervise undergraduate work study students responsible for media preparation and common solutions.
- Train undergraduate and graduate students in experimental procedures
- Comply with Department of Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA, and biohazard safety standards and promote workplace safety.
- Assist with preparation of Animal Protocols for IACUC, and Human Subjects Protocols for IRB.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and presents scientific projects at departmental and national meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in biology or other related field and three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with animal maintenance and handling, as well as tissue dissection and analysis.
- Knowledge of standard cell and molecular biology and biochemical research methodology, principles and procedures.
- Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
- Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies.
- Ability to organize supplies for laboratory.
- Ability to maintain biological and chemical inventories and laboratory safety data sheets.
- Ability to ensure compliance of laboratory procedures for IACUC and IRB Protocols.
- Knowledge and skill working with Microsoft suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for data management and summation.
- Experience with image analysis software.
- Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.
- Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
- Ability to investigate, gather, and analyze data and draw conclusions from this data.
- A high degree of personal and professional integrity, poise, maturity, and excellent judgment.
- Ability to self-motivate, make independent judgment and to perform tasks on own initiative, many of which have no precedent.
