SDB Professional Development and Education Committee. announces the John Doctor Best Education Video Competition

The John Doctor Education Prize will be awarded to the winner(s) of the Best Education Video Competition.

Challenge

Create a short instructional video to communicate what we do as scientists to the general public. Depending on the topic chosen (see below), video entries may be as short as 30 seconds or as long as 5 minutes. Lab or group entries are welcome. Videos should be geared towards students and a lay audience.

Choose one of the following topics:

  1. How is your research impacted by ethical issues?

  2. How do you integrate ethics into your developmental biology course?

  3. How are synthetic embryos/organoids used to answer scientific questions?

Eligibility

The presenter or presenting team must be current SDB members (2023 dues paid). Undergraduate applicants must submit as part of a team with either a graduate student, postdoc, or faculty member.

Selection Criteria

Videos will be evaluated based on:

  • Accuracy, clarity, and engagement with the content
  • Quality (visual and auditory) of the video
  • Review of a brief (1 page) written summary describing the video that includes the intended audience as well as tips for how the video could be used for science communication, outreach, or in the classroom
