June 2026 GO Release (2026-06-19) Now Available - Breaking Changes

:warning: Important: File URLs and Names Have Changed in 2026-06-19

If you use automated pipelines or scripts that download GO annotation files, your code needs to update by July 2026.

What Changed

  • File organization: Annotation files are now organized into /gaf, /gpad, and /gpi subdirectories
  • File naming: Files now use UniProt species identification codes (e.g., HUMAN-uniprot.gaf.gz instead of goa_human.gaf.gz)
  • File splitting: Multi-species files (Xenbase, CGD) are now split into separate single-species files
  • Two versions for MODs: Both MOD-centric (DROME-mod.gaf.gz) and UniProt-centric (DROME-uniprot.gaf.gz) versions available

Example changes:

  • Old: https://current.geneontology.org/annotations/goa_human.gaf.gz
  • New: https://current.geneontology.org/annotations/gaf/HUMAN-uniprot.gaf.gz

Timeline

  • Now-July: Old files available at current locations
  • July-September: Old URLs will redirect (when possible)
  • After September: Old URLs will no longer work
