Amherst College invites applications for the Biology Laboratory Instructor and Coordinator. The Biology Laboratory Instructor and Coordinator is a full-time, 40 hour/week position. The Biology Laboratory Instructor and Coordinator supports the teaching mission of the Biology Department through the implementation of hands-on learning in the laboratory. Primary responsibility will be the coordination, mounting, and teaching of laboratories for the introductory cell and molecular biology course that is offered every semester to a diverse group of students. The lab instructor and coordinator will design new laboratory modules and work collaboratively with a group of faculty to align learning objectives and opportunities. Key responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate multiple laboratory sections associated with the introductory cellular and molecular biology course (BIOL-191).
  • Work collaboratively with faculty to coordinate learning experiences, goals, and schedules.
  • Innovate, develop and apply new and existing laboratory modules in order to engage a highly diverse student body.
  • Hire, organize, and supervise undergraduate teaching assistants and/or casual employees.
  • Execute and supervise laboratory preparation, set up, and break down.
  • Teach 3-4 lab sections per semester or the equivalent.
  • Provide evaluation of student laboratory work, including their written and practical work.
  • Summer months include curricular development and work to support the mission of the biology department. Examples include development of laboratory modules and participation in summer programs that bring new students into the sciences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a cellular and molecular biology field is preferred; or a Master’s degree and 3-5 years related experience.
  • Strong communication, time-management, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Dedicated excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Ability to research and create written and visual communications.
  • Demonstrated excellence in engaging and supporting a diverse student body.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently, multi-task, and have attention to detail.
  • Limited lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours in order to accommodate course schedules.
