Currently, we seek an instructor who has expertise in teaching introductory lab courses, including cell and molecular, organismal, and/or ecology and evolution. In addition, there are opportunities for lab instructors to develop labs courses for biology majors at the intermediate and upper level. Lab instructors work closely with students are must have demonstrated experience in developing pedagogies and classroom ecologies that engage students from diverse academic backgrounds and lived experiences. This is a 10-month position, with the expectation is that laboratory instructors work full time while classes are in session and as needed when classes are not in session.
Laboratory Instructors ordinarily teach four laboratory courses each semester. Responsibilities include conducting pre- and post-lab lectures, independently conducting each student lab session, and grading student work. In addition, Lab Instructors are also responsible for maintaining and developing teaching labs and exercises; design and test new teaching labs; assisting students in completing lab material, both during scheduled labs and at other times; facilitating student review sessions and help prepare students for exams; generate lab exams; ensure proper use of equipment and ensure that all safety procedures and protocols are followed.
In addition to teaching, lab instructors are also integral to our academic advising program. Academic advising requires lab instructors to hold regular office hours; track progress of majors and communicate status to department Chair; respond to student inquiries; write recommendation letters as requested by students. Department administration responsibilities include participation in relevant department committees and meetings, including Safety Committee. Other duties may also be assigned by the department chair as needed to fulfill the Department’s changing needs.
Requirements: Formal educational training in biology, or a closely-related field, including preferably a Master’s Degree or Pd.D. Proficiency in laboratory course teaching responsibilities, including lecturing, grading and working with both groups and individual students from diverse backgrounds. Basic experience in advising students on choice of academic courses and/or career-related topics.
This is a 10-month position.
