mitochondrial rRNA: nomenclature descrepancy b/w wormBASE & wormBOOK

I noticed that 12S and 16S mitochondrial rRNAs are annotated as 18S and 23S in Wormbase. Wiki-ing and Googl-ing didn’t help much, anybody could clarify what’s the proper nomenclature for these C.elegans rRNAs?

I’ve done some literature search and it looks like many (if not all) species - from flies to human have 12S (mitochondrial s-rRNA) and 16S(mitochondrial l-rRNA) genes. So annotations on Wormbase for these two guys are misleading. They make C. elegans look like chimera of eucaryots (23S) and procaryots (18S) at the moment, which is not the case.

Hi Peter, I’m a sequence curator for WormBase and I’ll take a look into this.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
