Dr. Anthony Letai, Director of the National Cancer Institute, provides Guidance on Applications for Studies with Animal Models. Grant proposal abstracts should include a sentence or two regarding a “brief, explicit justification of the use of animal models and why alternatives are inferior." Additionally, “the proposal should also contain a plan for validation of the findings of this animal experiment in a human model”, in the abstract. Perhaps this guidance will become generalized across institutes?
