Ph.D. and post-doctoral positions are available in the groups of Alex Dammermann and Verena Jantsch at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL) in Vienna, Austria, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
Work in the Jantsch lab is focused on the identification of genes and processes essential for pairing and synapsis of homologous chromosomes during meiotic prophase using a combination of forward and reverse genetics approaches in C. elegans. The lab is looking to recruit a Ph.D. student to study the role of the cytoskeleton in chromosome movements and their coupling to the cell cycle.
Work in the Dammermann lab seeks to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying centriole assembly and their function in the formation of centrosomes and cilia, cellular structures with important roles in cell division, motility and signaling. To do this we are using a combination of cell biological, (reverse) genetic and biochemical methods, primarily using C. elegans as an experimental model. The lab is currently hiring several Ph.D. students and a post-doc, with projects available in all areas.
Candidates for the Ph.D. positions should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics or a related field. Familiarity with C. elegans is highly desirable but not a requirement. Candidates for the post-doctoral position should have a background in C. elegans and/or centrosome/cilia biology, be familiar with current techniques in biochemistry and/or microscopy and have at least one publication in an international peer-reviewed journal from their Ph.D. work.
MFPL is part of the Vienna Biocenter, an international research environment. The working language on campus is English. Excellent communication skills are essential, as are critical thinking, organizational skills and most of all motivation and enthusiasm.
Interested candidates should send their CV, a brief description of their research interests and the names of three referees to Alex Dammermann (alex.dammermann@univie.ac.at) or Verena Jantsch (verena.jantsch@univie.ac.at), as applicable. Positions remain open until filled. However, applications received before 1st of November will be given priority.
