PhD position using machine learning to study neurodegeneration

The San Miguel Lab has an open position for a PhD student or Postdoctoral Researcher. Students with a Bioengineering, Neuroscience, Genetics, or related-background are encouraged to apply. The project is focused on studying neurodegeneration driven by aging, environmental stressors, and genetic perturbations in the nematode C. elegans. The project hinges on quantitative characterization of neurodegenerative phenotypes using live fluorescence imaging and computer vision tools (specifically machine learning). We combine a variety of approaches, which include the use of mutations, RNAi silencing, calcium imaging, optogenetics, CRISPR/Cas9 genetic engineering, and microfluidics. We will use these tools to link neuron form to function, and to run genetic screens to identify pathways that modulate these neurodegenerative changes.
Individuals from traditionally under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
