Post-doc position at Garcia lab, Biotechnology Institute, Univ. of Helsinki

The laboratory is looking for an outstanding scientist to contribute in deciphering the open questions in the field of RNA repeat toxicity associated with degenerative disorders.
The lab’s goal is to dissect the distinct factors and mechanisms that underlie the processes of cellular degeneration caused by RNAs bearing expanded nucleotide repeats. These toxic repeat-bearing RNAs are associated with a wide number of neuromuscular degenerative disorders from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to Myotonic Dystrophies (DMs). We have established C. elegans models of Myotonic Dystrophy, which results from the presence of RNAs with CUG expansions in the 3’UTR and, using genetic approaches, we identified a group of conserved modulators of cellular toxicity.

Our research aims are: 1) Dissect the mechanisms of toxicity modulation for the genes we have identified as mediators of toxicity in Myotonic Dystrophy (published and unpublished), including the nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway; 2) Identify the full complement of cellular components/pathways that combinatorially regulate the processes of RNA toxicity

Requirements and position details:

  • Candidates should be highly motivated and dedicated to research with strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Strong background in C. elegans research
  • Experience in RNA biology
  • Experience in biochemical approaches is preferable but not a limiting factor
  • This position is fully funded for 3 years; there is also access to postdoc fellowships for future exploration

The preferred starting date is as soon as possible.
