A post-doctoral position is available for an independent researcher with expertise in genetics to join a collaborative effort between the Wharton and Hart research groups at Brown University and a major pharmaceutical company. This project is funded in part by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The post-doctoral fellow will play a critical role in this cross-species collaboration, focused on addressing the current lack of effective treatments for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neuromuscular disease that results in progressive degeneration of cortical and spinal motor neurons. Our collaboration leverages two model systems, C. elegans and Drosophila, and focuses on identifying compounds and genetic variants that can suppress neurodegeneration in unbiased screens. The project involves whole animal chemical and genetic screens using ALS disease models in both species and provides an exciting opportunity to work at the interface between academia and industry.
Priority will be given to highly motivated applicants with strong analytical skills who can work independently as well as part of a highly interactive group. The ideal applicant will have demonstrated expertise in techniques used in the areas of: genetics, biochemistry, chemical biology, and/or cell biology. They should have outstanding communication skills and a willingness to expand their skill set. Postdoctoral candidates must have a Ph.D. in a relevant area of biology or chemical biology with 3-5 years of research experience. Previous experience with Drosophila and/or C. elegans as a model system is preferred.
