Professor of Practice in Microscopy

Professor of Practice, Non-Tenure-Track Teaching Position in Microscopy at Syracuse University

The Department of Biology at Syracuse University (biology.syr.edu) is seeking an experienced microscopist to manage the Blatt BioImaging facility (https://thecollege.syr.edu/biology/biologyresearch/blatt-bioimaging-center/) and teach microscopy labs as a non-tenure track Professor of Practice. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment from Jan 2023 - June 2025 with the possibility of renewal. Professors of Practice are full members of the departmental and university community and are eligible to vote on department, college and university decisions excluding those related to tenure track faculty hiring, promotion and tenure decisions.

Candidates should have extensive experience in light microscopy and strong people skills. This position requires expertise in epifluorescent and confocal based approaches for both fixed and live samples. Microscopy expertise outside this area (e.g. STORM, STED, lightsheet, SIM, 2P…) is not required, but would be an advantage for future growth of the core facility. A Ph.D. in Biology or a related field that uses microscopy is required. Prior teaching and/or training experience would be a major asset, especially experience teaching laboratory classes or training people to use high-end confocal microscopes. Syracuse University is particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate past accomplishment toward fostering diversity and inclusion in their teaching or professional roles.

In addition to teaching 3-4 formal undergraduate and/or graduate classes a year, the successful applicant will train, and collaborate with, users of the bioimaging facility, advise researchers on the most relevant microscopy techniques and data analysis methods for their experiments, perform experiments for grants and research publications, manage the instruments and their service and maintenance, oversee billing of machine usage and collaborate with other faculty to write grants for new microscopes. They will also recruit new users of the facility and arrange microscopy workshops for graduate students, postdocs and faculty. The Blatt BioImaging Center currently serves users from across the Syracuse University campus and from neighboring institutions and local companies.

For full consideration, candidates must complete an online application and electronically submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, diversity statement describing plans for or efforts in furthering diversity and inclusion in the classroom and program and contact information for three professional references through Syracuse University Online Employment Site | Professor of Practice in Microscopy. Review of applications will start on November 11, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
