I have previously used a desktop laminar flow hood made by Environmental Air Control, Inc. (EACI) and am now looking for a place to buy one. This unit has a work area of about 2x2x2 feet and can be set up to blow air either horizontally toward the user or down from the top. I can’t seem to find these except in used equipment sales. Can someone tell me if the company is still in business or, if not, suggest a similar inexpensive hood to use. I like this one because it is small enough to be on a bench in the lab instead of having to use a full sized biosafety cabinet in a tissue culture room. I also don’t want to use up the wall space for one of the 4 or 5 foot wide stand alone horizontal laminar flow units.
I ended up making myself a bespoke flow hood to fit in the space (and limited funds) I had, but there are such hoods available at a price, for example this company in the US I looked at;
After much more searching today, I found it. It’s listed on Thomas Scientific as Envirco Horizontal / Vertical Flow Module. I thought that Envirco was the new name for EACI, but even today I can’t find this hood on the actual Envirco site. I would highly recommend this one. You can move the motor so that it can be used horizontally and is excellent for drying newly thawed worm strains and doing other clean work like setting up cultures. I haven’t found it on any other supplier’s site, which is weird.
