Senior scientist/German equivalent ro Assistant Professor/Junior group leader

The Institute of Biology III (Department of Prof. Ralf Baumeister, Bioinformatics & Molecular Genetics) at the University of Freiburg advertises the following position:

Senior scientist/equivalent to assistant professorship (Akademische Rätin/Akademischer Rat im Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit A13)

This position is available immediately, and is initially granted for three years, with the possibility of an extension for another 3 years.

You have already postdoc experience and want to contribute to our research and teaching program (Genetics/biochemistry/neurobiology/bioinformatics, preferably with C. elegans, human cells, etc.) with own ideas, and develop your own research profile towards habilitation (eligibility for a call to a professorship/chair). We provide a fully equipped lab and expect your active participation in ongoing and future research cooperations, and, in the long run, the acquisition of your own third party funding. A moderate level of teaching is expected, in particular the coordination and half of the practical course “Biologie fuer Studierende der Medizin” (teaching in German required only for this course – the lab language is English).

We are looking for highly motivated researchers with a strong background in C. elegans that will integrate in our department, and complement and extend the focus of our faculty in signalling research. A background in biochemistry/genetics to study intracellular dynamics and their effect on age-related mechanisms, stress and metabolic signalling, and tumorigenesis is preferred. Funding of the position is initially secured for three years and can be extended for another 3 years.

Our lab provides an interdisciplinary environment and hosts researchers of several countries. Lab language is English. We are affiliated with two SFB/CRC research consortia (tumor biology, protein dynamics) and two Graduate Schools in Biomedicine. The group belongs to both the Faculty of Biology (Institute of Biology III) and the Faculty of Medicine (ZBMZ –Center for Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Research). Lab members have access to facilities and grant opportunities of both faculties. The lab is also involved in the University programs (BIOSS, CIBSS) funded by the German excellence initiative. The successful candidate will receive the benefits of a governmental officer (A13Z).

The University of Freiburg is one of the top universities in Germany, its Life Sciences are always found among the top positions in national rankings. Freiburg is located at the slopes of the Black Forest in a marvellous environment: it is one of the oldest German student towns, 200.000 inhabitants, located 30 miles from Basel and its academic and industrial centers, and 40 miles from Strasbourg, in the Switzerland- France-Germany triangle. It is also considered one of the most-beloved places in Germany (top 3 among places to be visited worldwide, Freiburg travel - Lonely Planet | Germany, Europe ), and the warmest city in the country.
