after the most recent post regarding the lipid content of worms I thought perhaps it would useful to have a conspicuous link / page in the wormbook where the important ‘per worm’ values are listed.
For example, from forum correspondence the following values have been suggested;
protein per worm = 100-400ng
fat(triglycerides) per worm = 37ng(20 degrees) - 53ng(15 degrees)
DNA per worm = 1ng
RNA per worm = 9ng
There may well be better estimates now and other useful values, but still the idea of having them all listed on a reference page seems helpful I think?
yes, I suppose it would be useful to know who to contact regarding setting up something in the wormbook (a kind of handy reference page containing these figures)?
The editors of WormBook are identified at the site; you could contact them. The problem is, WormBook chapters are treated as just that - full chapters of information, as in a book, each surveying a topic or topics, written by an expert or experts, fully referenced, and listed in Pubmed. I’m not sure a few paragraphs of useful information, or even a larger FAQ, would work well in that context, though if you were to contact the authors of an existing chapter or a planned upcoming chapter this information might be a valuable addition, especially if you can provide a citation to be used.
My strongest recommendation would probably be that you write something for the Worm Breeder’s Gazette, which is well suited to this sort of thing (though the submission deadline for the next issue is Monday!). Other obvious options include the WormBase Wiki (which seems to be used much more heavily than I’d have guessed, but mostly for coordination within WormBase) or the FAQ page of WormBase itself.
yes I had also thought that the information sits uncomfortably between just ‘useful background knowledge’ and something that might need a proper reference site. In the end, perhaps having this conversation on the forum is enough as any future requests can reference this thread. I think a submission to the worm gazette would also be a little thin.
At the same time, additional information in a similar vein could also include a link to this thread.
