Staff scientist position in Ward lab at UC Santa Cruz

The Ward lab at UC Santa Cruz is seeking a staff scientist (associate specialist or specialist) to join our team to explore how individual, evolutionarily conserved transcription factors regulate distinct gene expression programs controlling cell division and differentiation and organ development in living animals. Duties will include performing cytology and protein biochemistry with C. elegans and Brugia malayi; genetic and RNA interference experiments to identify and validate genes; genome editing using CRISPR; generating and maintaining worm strains; and molecular biological techniques such as microinjection, PCR, cloning, and recombinant protein expression.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: M.S. degree or equivalent degree in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or other relevant field, and at least one year post-baccalaureate degree lab experience in molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid isolation, recombinant DNA techniques, and PCR; or baccalaureate degree and at least 7 years post-baccalaureate lab experience in molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid isolation, recombinant DNA techniques, and PCR.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with C. elegans, performing genetics and carrying out microinjections; biochemical techniques such as protein purification, immunodetection, and cell staining; good organizational, time management, and problem solving skills; the ability to perform tasks in an organized manner, work accurately, and to meet deadlines and to communicate results. The candidate must be willing to work as an integral member of a research team and have strong communication skills. For Associate Specialist rank, a demonstrated record of one or more peer-reviewed publications.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for one year, with possible reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment, a review to assess performance will be conducted. In addition, reappointment is contingent upon availability of funding.
