Staging Xenopus laevis embryos and tadpoles

Xenbase has 2 new open access resources help everyone stage Xenopus embryos: a new series of drawings in the classic Nieuwkoop and Faber style, and a Landmarks Table.

  1. The Zahn drawings are accessible on Xenbase, through an attributable, non-commercial creative commons license (CC BY-NC 4.0).

The Zahn drawings can be used and downloaded from here: Zahn Drawings of Xenopus laevis Development

A poster of the Zahn drawings, showing key stages of Xenopus development, is available as supplementary material in the online version of this article in Development, at Normal Table of Xenopus development: a new graphical resource | Development | The Company of Biologists.

  1. The Landmarks Table is a simple yet distinctive combination of ‘external’ and ‘internal’ morphological traits, in addition to gene markers for stage specific tissues that can be used to distinguish each developmental stage in both species of Xenopus.

The table is on Xenbase (Xenopus staging landmarks) and has live links that direct you to (1) gene pages, with links to extensive gene-specific expression data, genomic resources and orthologs, and to (2) XAO pages, with tissue-specific gene expression data.

This online version of the Landmarks Table is dynamic, and will be updated with the latest molecular and anatomical data.

We want the Xenopus Staging Landmarks Table to include your reliable staging hacks so we’d love to hear from you!
