I wonder whether anyone already had done the next generation whole genome sequencing for C. elegans whatever wild type or mutant.
My PI got an information on the price, which is $60,000. She said she directly called and asked to Dr. Oliver in Columbia University.
There is so big difference from what I got, but she won’t believe mine and thinks she is still right.
For those reason, my project was stuck since more than 6 months ago.
As a matter of fact, I gave up convincing her to help my project.
But I want to know the truth.
Does it cost so much?
a single run on an illumina sequencer will probably allow you to get enough data for a whole genome sequence; see nature methods | VOL.5 NO.10 | OCTOBER 2008 | 865. That will cost ~5000 pounds, and likely less, if you break down the wells on the illumina chip.
However, taking the data from that sequence run, and compiling it into a whole genome, then analysing it; that will cost you a lot of time, knowledge and computing power. If you cost in postdoc time, plus university overheads, I guess 60k is reasonable for a complete genome sequence.
There are places on the web in Australia, who offer illumina sequencing on a contract basis.
SOLiD sequencing is comparable to Illumina sequencing. [reference] however i don’t know exactly how comparable their pricing is. Importantly, i said “comparable” not “identical”
