time from mitotic germ cell to oocyte?

Hi Guys,

Can someone tell me or give me a reference for how long it takes for a mitotic germ cell to become an oocyte. I have found the reference from Hirsch 1976 about it taking 6.5 hours for the total volume to turn over in eggs, but I would really like to know the time it takes for cells to cycle through. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot,
Toshia

Hi Toshia,
It probably takes more than 38-40 hrs to reach to oocyte from mitotic cells. There is a recent paper published in Science from Prof. Ann Villeneuve’s lab. With EdU labeling they have found the time from entry into meiosis to formation of oocyte which is about 38-40hrs. Here is the reference for that paper. This information is there in the supplementary material.
