The Department of Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno, seeks two tenure-track assistant professors, in the broad area of NEUROSCIENCE, with an expected start date of July 1, 2017. For the neurobiologist position, we are seeking candidates with expertise that might include integrative approaches spanning cells to systems, optogenetics, neurogenetics, plasticity, neurophysiology, neurodevelopment or behavior. For the computational neuroscientist, we are interested in candidates whose research might range from analyzing large data sets of functional and molecular neuroscience information to building computational models at the level of molecules, neurons, circuits, or functional brain regions. Both positions are part of a strategic expansion in the neurosciences. Highly competitive startup funds are available. In addition, there is potential support from existing and pending NIH COBRE career development grants. Our faculty are expected to develop nationally recognized, extramurally funded research programs, to train PhD students, and to participate in undergraduate teaching.
The department has more than 300 neuroscience majors, more than 1000 biology majors, about 60 graduate students, 28 state-funded tenure ladder faculty and 7 state-funded lecturers. Extramural awards average ~ $4.5 million/yr. Reno is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lake Tahoe, and has been rated one of the best small cities in the US for outdoor recreation and overall quality of life.
