Worm IRC Channel - Drop in Chat/Scientific Help?

In the interest of building a sense of community I suggest we try using IRC! IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and it’s essentially a fancy chat room system.

If anyone is out there that uses IRC, I made a channel on the Freenode network.

Server: irc.freenode.org
Channel: ##worms

If you don’t use an IRC client, you can use a web interface here: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23%23worms&uio=d4

We promise we won’t bite. You might notice that there are ‘people’ in the room but nobody is talking. Chances are that they are away picking worms, pipetting something or drinking a caffeinated beverage.

Typical banter thus far:

  • What’s for supper tonight? You’re still in the lab?
  • How awesome the CGC is
  • How worms get to travel and see the world more than we do
  • What meeting we’ll have a meetup at next (edit: steveh and Snug to be at LA2015?!)
  • Favourite heat stress protocols

So what are you waiting for? Drop by if you have any scientific questions and need troubleshooting help or if you’re bored and want to hang out with some fellow worm breeders!

Recent highlights:

[16:28] how’s you and your lab refit
[16:28] do you have 10 sets of pipettors now?
[16:28] no
[16:28] just two post docs and about 15 pipettes

[16:50] it’s pretty clear no?
[16:50] i had thought about a screen too
[16:50] like the signalling pathway
[16:50] I bet you
[16:50] it’s aak-1/2
[16:51] yes and no
[16:51] nutrient sensor
[16:51] the aak-1 & 2 story is messy
[16:51] they sleep with anyone

[16:11] he has written so much stuff on this
[16:11] yah
[16:12] ok
[16:12] he’s like
[16:12] the only guy working on it bigtime
[16:12] you should be best friends forever

excellent idea…it would be even better if this facility existed on the forum…I’m sure it could be established…the ability to interact in real time is a great tool for the worm research community

Bump

for those of you new to worms and/or who might want to ask practical worm questions live then this might be for you. It’s updated…

I remember way back when I started research work it was just becoming possible to send live interactive messages to other labs rather than relying on static emails. Sometimes it’s useful to have a contact at 11 O’ Clock in the evening when something goes wrong to ask their opinion…imagine having access to tens of clued-in individuals at any instant across our community.

We are the world, we are the future…I could reminisce for ages blah…blah…

Erh…anyway, take a look and try this out…it’s not a replacement for the Forum, or for friends or for thinking about a problem oneself BEFORE asking the question or for help…but it makes you a part of a very vibrant and talented community.

Yes, please come drop by! It’s nice to talk to people in the worm community and maybe run ideas by each other. If you’re still not convinced, I actually got some help from a certain forum regular and it saved me a lot of time/grey hairs!
