PAN-GO Functionome: How to use Function Categories

PAN-GO Functionome: How to find genes in a selected function category

GO’s brand new PAN-GO Functionome (ICYMI: GO’s new human gene resource and accompanying Nature paper on the “PAN-GO Functionome”), can be used in many different ways. This how-to is about using the Function Category filters to find human genes of interest.

In a hurry? Here’s how to use the Function Categories in the PAN-GO Functionome in less than 30 seconds!

Detailed guide on using Function Categories to find human genes of interest:

The PAN-GO Functionome is at https://functionome.geneontology.org

In the filter to the left of the screen, type in the name of the functional category. Only terms in the list of Function Categories will be available.

If you don’t know the exact name of the Functional Category, you can browse the options below the text box. Each category is color-coded by aspect (Molecular Function, Biological Process, or Cellular Component), and each term has a count of the genes in that category.

Click one or more Functional Categories to add it to the filter. Remove terms by clicking the small X at the top of the panel.

More about Function Categories (also referred to as GO Subsets, or GO Slims):

The PAN-GO Functional Categories is the list of terms in the GO Generic Slim, available for download on the GO Subsets page. This list of terms is intended to provide a summary of the ontology without all the detail in the full list of GO terms.

Selection of a Function Category term will include all genes annotated to that specific GO Term, and will also include genes annotated to child terms of that GO term. The Functional Category chromosome will contain HP1BP3, annotated to chromosome. That category will also contain BRDT as it is annotated to chromatin. It should exclude the gene ADIPOR1, only annotated to plasma membrane, as well as any other genes not annotated to the chosen Functional Categories or the child terms of that term.
